Starting the Counseling Journey

You love your kid - there is no denying that. This parenting thing has its moments though. You constantly get calls from your child’s school, which is overwhelming in it of itself. You’re doing your absolute best, but sometimes it’s as though no matter what you do, things result in tears and screams - sometimes it’s your kid, sometimes it’s you.

You know your child has so much to offer. You just wish you understood them more so that you wouldn’t feel ineffective as a parent or so that the school could see the great kid you see.

This is where I can help! I genuinely believe there is no such thing as a “bad kid.” Sometimes children are just misunderstood or lack the skills to be successful at school or at home.

As a former teacher, current educator, licensed counselor and mom, I am all too familiar with the everyday struggles parents can face. But I am also confident that your child can overcome their challenges! I want your life to be more peaceful. More importantly I want your child to enjoy their childhood and have the skills to express themselves to be better understood.

What Will Counseling Look Like for My Child?

There is no cookie cutter recipe when it comes to counseling. However, with each case the parents are always included!

The first session is held with the parents only. It is important to understand the family dynamics, feedback you have received from school (when pertinent), as well as your goals for your child. As needed you and I will have follow-up sessions, separate from your child's sessions, to consult and collaborate towards your child's goals. When appropriate, parents may be invited to participate in a session with their child.

Pending on the child's age, developmental level, interests and concerns, various modalities may be used to keep your child engaged in meeting the goals we create together. A mix of play therapy, literature, art and the use of games are used with children age 3 to young adulthood - in individual and group settings.
